FAQ

Why choose Miami Kiteboarding?

What makes Miami Kiteboarding different from other kiteboarding schools?

At MKB, we believe the right location makes all the difference! With over 25 years of kiteboarding experience, we offer personalized instruction across Miami, selecting the best riding conditions for your level and goals. From your first kite launch to mastering upwind riding, transitions, and waves, our instructors help you progress at your own pace.

Why does MKB offer lessons at different locations?

Because not every kiteboarder needs the same conditions! Beginners may benefit from shallow, flat water, while more advanced riders may prefer ocean waves. Our multi-location approach allows us to select a suitable teaching environment based on your level, wind direction, and daily conditions.

Why do you use a boat to reach the sandbars?

Some of Miami's most beautiful shallow-water riding areas are located offshore and cannot be accessed directly from the beach. Our boat taxi takes students and instructors to selected sandbars, away from crowded beaches and shoreline obstacles, creating a more open and focused learning environment.

What are the advantages of learning at a sandbar?

Shallow, flat water can make learning easier, especially for beginners. Depending on tides and conditions, students can stand in the water, practice kite control, recover their board more easily, and develop confidence without dealing with breaking waves.

Is the sandbar better than learning from the beach?

It depends on your level! Beach-based lessons are excellent for learning the fundamentals, including safety, kite setup, and wind awareness. Sandbars offer a different environment, particularly useful for water practice, body dragging, waterstarts, and early riding progression.

Do I have to take a boat for my lesson?

Not at all! MKB offers both land-based and boat-assisted instruction. We'll recommend the most suitable option based on your experience, preferences, and wind conditions.

Can I choose between flat water and waves?

Absolutely! Let us know your riding level and what you'd like to accomplish. We'll help select a location offering the most suitable conditions, whether you're looking for flat-water progression or ocean-wave experience.

Where exactly will my lesson take place?

Your meeting location will be confirmed before your lesson. Since wind direction and weather can change, we select instructional areas based on the conditions and your skill level.

Lessons & learning

I've never tried kiteboarding. Can I start with MKB?

Absolutely! No previous kiteboarding experience is necessary. Your instructor will introduce you to equipment, safety systems, wind awareness, kite control, and the essential skills needed to progress toward riding.

Are your lessons private?

Yes! Our private lessons offer one-on-one instruction tailored to your abilities, allowing you to learn at your own pace with your instructor's full attention.

Can two people with different experience levels take lessons together?

Yes! We can coordinate private lessons at the same location, each with a dedicated instructor. This allows friends or couples to share the experience while receiving instruction suited to their individual levels.

How long is a kiteboarding lesson?

Our standard kiteboarding lessons are a minimum of 3 instructional hours. This gives students sufficient time to practice, develop new skills, and make meaningful progress.

For boat-assisted lessons, boat transportation time is not included in the three instructional hours.

How many lessons will I need before I can ride independently?

Everyone progresses differently. Wind conditions, previous experience, coordination, and confidence all influence learning speed. Many students require approximately 12–15 hours or more of instruction to develop the skills needed for independent riding.

What will I learn during my first lesson?

It depends on your lesson location and experience level!

Land-based lessons: You'll start with the fundamentals — kite setup, wind window, safety systems, launching and landing, and kite control before progressing into the water.

Boat-assisted sandbar lessons: With equipment already prepared, you'll get straight into hands-on kite flying and water-based exercises, progressing from kite control and body dragging to waterstarts and riding, depending on your abilities.

Your instructor will adapt each lesson to your level, helping you progress toward becoming an independent rider.

I can already waterstart. Can you help me ride upwind?

Definitely! We can focus on board control, edging, body position, maintaining speed, and improving your upwind technique. Once you're comfortable, we can introduce transitions and more advanced riding skills.

Do you teach advanced kiteboarding?

Yes! MKB offers instruction for different riding levels, including upwind technique, transitions, jumps, and advanced board control, depending on the instructor, location, and conditions.

Can children learn kiteboarding?

Yes, subject to age, weight, swimming ability, maturity, and instructor assessment. Contact us with your child's age and weight so we can determine whether kiteboarding instruction is appropriate.

Equipment & safety

Do I need my own kiteboarding equipment?

No! Kiteboarding equipment is included in our private lesson packages, including the kite, board, harness, helmet, and flotation equipment appropriate for the lesson.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes. Basic swimming ability and comfort in the water are essential, even when lessons take place in shallow areas.

Is kiteboarding dangerous?

Like any watersport, kiteboarding involves risks. Professional instruction, appropriate equipment, careful location selection, and suitable weather conditions are important parts of learning safely. Your instructor will teach you safety procedures from the beginning.

What happens if the wind becomes too strong or too weak?

Your instructor will assess the conditions and may adjust, postpone, or stop the lesson if the wind is unsuitable for your level. Safety always comes first.

Is there safety support during offshore lessons?

MKB's offshore instructional program is designed around selected shallow-water locations, experienced instructors, and planned water-safety procedures. The specific support arrangements depend on the session and operating conditions.

Booking, pricing & weather

How much does a private kiteboarding lesson cost?

Our private lesson packages are:

  • 3 hours — $650
  • 9 hours — $1,900

The 9-hour package is ideal for students looking to build their skills through three progressive 3-hour sessions.

Can I book several lessons over a weekend?

Absolutely! We can coordinate multiple sessions according to your availability and wind conditions. The 9-hour package is a great option for students planning several days of instruction.

Why can't you guarantee my exact lesson time?

Kiteboarding depends on the wind! A particular wind strength may be ideal for one rider but unsuitable for another. We schedule lessons around the conditions most appropriate for your skill level.

What happens if there's no wind on my booked date?

If MKB cancels your lesson because of unsuitable wind or weather, we'll arrange a new date or provide an eligible lesson credit according to our cancellation policy.

Can I reschedule my lesson?

Yes! Individual lesson bookings may be rescheduled with at least 24 hours' notice. Group bookings and events require at least 48 hours' notice.

Are lessons refundable?

Lesson purchases are generally non-refundable in cash. Eligible cancellations are handled through rescheduling or store credit. Cancellations within 24 hours of the scheduled lesson and no-shows are non-refundable and non-creditable.

How long are my lesson credits valid?

Lesson credits and packages are valid for one year from the purchase date, subject to MKB's published terms.

MKB Progression App & Gear Rewards

What is the MKB Progression App?

Our Progression App helps you follow your kiteboarding journey! You can track completed lessons, review your skills, follow your IKO progression, and discover what comes next.

Can I review what I learned after my lesson?

Yes! Your progression record helps you revisit the skills covered during your lesson and identify what to practice next, with lesson-related video content where available.

How does the MKB Gear Rewards program work?

Every completed 3-hour lesson earns you an additional 5% discount toward eligible kiteboarding equipment, up to a maximum of 25%.

The more you learn, the closer you get to owning your own gear!

How do I access my Progression App?

After your lesson, you'll receive access instructions. Register using the same email address used for your MKB purchase, create your password, and start following your progression.

Ready to ride?

I'm not sure which lesson or location is right for me. Can you help?

Of course! That's exactly what we're here for. Tell us whether you're a complete beginner, already riding, or looking to improve specific skills. We'll help you choose the right lesson and riding environment.
